Industry report and experts highlight teamwork across sectors

Teamwork across sectors is needed to accelerate the development of the industrial internet, a frontier that countries around the world see as critical to increasing manufacturing capacity, officials and experts said after reviewing an industry report.

The added value of the industrial Internet is expected to reach 4.45 trillion yuan ($617 billion) this year, accounting for 3.64 percent of GDP, up from 4.10 trillion yuan in 2021, according to the latest report by the Chinese Academy of industrial internet.

The Industrial Internet refers to a network of combined, advanced machines with Internet-connected sensors and big data analytics, which is of great importance in increasing the productivity, efficiency and reliability of industrial production.

Zhang Yunming, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country’s top industry regulator, said the industrial Internet is a key infrastructure and a new industrial ecosystem for the deep integration of the new generation of information and communication technology and the industrial economy.

“This is the fundamental path to the digital transformation of the manufacturing sector and the main driver of its high-quality development,” Zhang said at a sub-forum of the 5th Hongqiao International Economic Forum during the ongoing 5th China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

“More efforts are needed to improve technical support capabilities and expand the breadth and depth of 5G network deployment in the industrial field,” Zhang said.

Currently, all major economies are prioritizing manufacturing development and have introduced a series of strategic measures to upgrade the manufacturing industry to make it more digital-era, internet-connected and intelligent, experts say.

Lu Chuncong, head of the China Academy of Industrial Internet, said that teamwork across sectors is critical to accelerating the development of the Industrial Internet. Industrial companies, telecommunications companies, software companies and industrial control companies need to work closely together to strengthen core technology research.

“Meanwhile, it will be a long-term process of upgrading thousands of industries through the industrial internet, determined by the imbalances in the development of China’s vast industrial economy and its conditions,” Lu said.

The academy released a report on Sunday that found the Industrial Internet is being used in 45 major categories of the nation’s economy. This year, the industrial Internet will contribute to the increase in the production of the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy.

In addition, the Industrial Internet will help promote the upgrading of China’s employment structure and stabilize employment, helping to create more than 1 million new jobs this year, the report said.

Frank Meng, president of Qualcomm China, said that major industrial countries in the world, such as China, Germany, the United States and Japan, are strongly promoting the development of the industrial Internet.

“As a general connectivity platform, 5G has played an important role in promoting the development of the industrial internet,” Meng said, adding that the US chip company had partnered with the China Academy of Industrial Internet to build a 5G-connected factory in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province.
