Top 5 Apple Devices Overdue an Update

Several Apple devices are now more than 18 months old, and with new hardware that could bring them valuable improvements on the horizon that mostly already exists in other devices, there are five notable products that seem due for an update.

While some devices such as the Pro Display XDR and HomePod mini are also likely due for an update, there are at least five major Apple devices that appear to be overdue for a refresh — where the new model could bring significant improvements. Similarly, as time goes on, it becomes increasingly difficult for Apple to justify leaving these devices in its product line without a hardware update.

5. iMac

Current model released in April 2021 (one year and seven months old).

While there’s some controversy over whether Apple will reintroduce a larger iMac model, the current 24-inch model has an M1 chip — meaning it’s outdated compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, redesigned MacBook Air, and iPad Pro. . Apple announced the M2 chip earlier this June at WWDC, and with three different devices now containing the chip, the iMac is ripe for a chip upgrade.

More reports from BloombergMark Gurman hints that an ‌iMac‌ with an M2 chip is not on the horizon. After the ‌M2‌ series of Macs, Gurman said the new ‌iMac‌ will be among the first in the M3 series of Macs, which will include an updated 13-inch ‌MacBook Air‌, an all-new 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ and potentially a new 12-inch laptop that is “still in early development .”

The ‌M3‌ chip is said to be built on TSMC’s 3nm technology, unlike the ‌M1‌ and ‌M2‌ which are built on the 5nm process. A more advanced manufacturing process is expected to significantly improve performance and efficiency.

The device is expected to be a successor to the current ‌M1‌ ‌iMac‌, and according to Gurman, it may not launch until late 2023, meaning it may be some time before a new ‌iMac‌ appears. It’s not clear why Apple would exclude the ‌iMac‌ from the ‌M2‌ chip and wait until the ‌M3‌ chip is available, especially since that means the current ‌M1‌ model will be around for quite some time.

4. AirPods Max

Current model released in December 2020 (one year and 11 months old).

Launched nearly two years ago, the AirPods Max are the oldest AirPods still in Apple’s lineup. Although they are the most expensive AirPods at $549, the ‌AirPods Max‌ don’t have many of the features that were present in the second-generation AirPods Pro earlier this year.

With H2 chips, significantly improved active noise cancellation, Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, adaptive transparency, skin-sensing sensors, the U1 chip, and precision tracking, there are a ton of important features yet to come in ‌AirPods Max‌. The headphones could also benefit from a refreshed selection of color options, MagSafe or USB-C charging, Conversation Boost, and sweat and water resistance.

The status of the next generation ‌AirPods Max‌ is currently unclear. In May 2021, Gurman said that Apple is not actively working on a second-generation AirPods Max, but it is unknown if this is still the case. Given that Apple seems to launch one new AirPods product per year, the ‌AirPods Max‌ could be the next for a refresh.

3. The entry-level Mac Mini

Current model released in November 2020 (two years old).

The ‌M1‌ Mac mini is the oldest Apple silicon Mac of the latest generation, and like the 24-inch ‌iMac‌, it could benefit from an upgrade to an ‌M2‌ chip.

Although adding an ‌M2‌ chip to the ‌Mac mini‌ would likely require limited internal changes, Apple has so far not considered it. Reports earlier this year suggested that Apple originally “had plans” to introduce new ‌Mac mini‌ models in 2022, but those arrangements were “likely scrapped” in favor of an all-new Mac Studio. A new ‌Mac mini‌ with an ‌M2‌ chip is still in the works and will be launched sometime in 2023.

2. Mac Pro

Current model released in December 2019 (two years and 11 months old).

The Mac Pro is one of the last Intel-powered Mac models still on sale, and the only remaining Mac product line without an Apple silicon chip option. The all-new model, which finally brings Apple silicon to the Mac company’s top professionals, has been anticipated for more than two years. At its “Peek Performance” event earlier this year, Apple even directly teased the introduction of the Apple silicon Mac Pro, saying “that’s another day.”

Previous reports of a smaller Mac Pro model positioned somewhere between the ‌Mac mini‌ and ‌Mac Pro‌ made it difficult to know what to expect from the future of the top-of-the-line ‌Mac Pro‌ line, but now it’s clear that many of those rumors refer to the Mac Studio, which sheds some light on what to expect from the next generation ‌Mac Pro‌.

More reports from Bloomberg‌Mark Gurman‌ on Apple ‌Mac Pro‌ silicon chip options and specs provide a fairly simple picture of what to expect from the new flagship Mac. According to Gurman, users will reportedly be able to configure the new ‌Mac Pro‌ with “‌M2‌ Ultra” and “M2 Extreme” chip options.

Beyond its basic specs, little is currently known about the device’s design, ports, performance, and potential for true modularity and customization. Apple is expected to launch the Apple silicon ‌Mac Pro‌ next year, and it could come alongside the “Pro” version of the Studio Display with a mini-LED panel and ProMotion support.

1. Intel Mac Mini

Current model released in October 2018 (four years and one month old).

While the ‌M1‌ ‌Mac mini‌ is the entry-level model in the lineup, the top-of-the-line ‌Mac mini‌ still features an Intel processor. The high-end ‌Mac mini‌ was theoretically refreshed in 2020 when Apple doubled the storage space on the device, but is otherwise identical to the 2018 Space Gray unibody model.

Apple has been rumored for some time to be working on a new Mac mini. The possibility of replacing the older high-end model with Apple’s silicon machine has previously been at the center of rumors related to the new Mac minis, but now it seems that both the base and high-end models may be refreshed at the same time. Apple is said to be working on two versions of the next-generation ‌Mac mini‌, one with the standard “M2” chip and the other high-end model with the “M2 Pro” chip.

The new high-end ‌Mac mini‌ with Apple silicon could gain huge performance and efficiency gains over the current model and have more Thunderbolt ports than the entry-level model. There is also the possibility of transformation. As a machine from more than two years before Apple began the transition to its own custom silicon chips in the Mac, and two years since the refresh of the basic ‌Mac mini‌, the high-end ‌Mac mini‌ seems to be Apple’s device most in need of a hardware refresh .
